What Is Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition that can blur your central vision, making daily tasks like reading and recognizing faces difficult. It often has no easily noticeable early signs, and adults over 50 can be more at risk of developing it.

AMD can progress gradually, but some forms of AMD can also progress rapidly. Though it doesn’t cause complete blindness, it can significantly impact your quality of life when it causes vision loss.

It’s important to get routine eye exams if you are at risk of developing AMD—and other eye conditions. The vision loss caused by AMD cannot be reversed, but AMD can be slowed, and your vision can be protected before it’s too late. Contact us and schedule your appointment today to get started.

Am I At Risk of Developing Age-Related Macular Degeneration?

You may be at an increased risk of developing age-related macular degeneration if you:

  • Are over 50
  • Are overweight
  • Smoke cigarettes
  • Have a family history of AMD
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Eat a lot of saturated fats

Lifestyle changes can help decrease your risk of developing AMD. But, we still recommend routine eye exams if you’re at risk.

What Is the Difference Between Wet & Dry Macular Degeneration?

There are 2 main types of age-related macular degeneration: dry AMD and wet AMD. Dry AMD is the most common form. It progresses slowly and is characterized by the gradual breakdown of the macula, leading to blurred or reduced vision over time.

Wet AMD is less common but more severe. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina. These blood vessels are weak and can leak fluid or blood. If untreated, this can cause rapid vision loss. Wet AMD is often considered a reason for seeking emergency eye care and should be treated as soon as possible.

Both forms require unique management strategies and treatments, highlighting the importance of regular eye exams and early diagnosis.
